Over the last six months of my challenge there have been
some difficult times but none more than Saturday.
To go out on your own stag do for eleven hours whilst most
of the people with you are drinking was very tough. I always knew it would be
tough, in fact since the beginning of my decision I thought it would be the
hardest day of the year, and I wasn’t wrong.
Whilst a night out can be hard as others around you drink it’s
only a small amount of time, whereas a full day out with others drinking and
you can see how their personalities and speech changes over the hours. It’s frustrating
and a bit annoying.
My best man produced a list of tasks which needed to be
completed through the day:
I completed two of them. A poor show but it was hard to carry
them out. I hang my head in shame. I did however wear the clip on earring that
was given to me. Very Beckham-esque
I did have a good day but have to admit to feeling a slight sense
of relief when it was over. If I can get through a sober stag do, I can get through
anything!
Thanks to my Dad and my cousin, Oli for going without drink
for the day. It was very supportive and did make it easier knowing that someone
else was doing it with me.
Those tasks are hilarious. I can imagine how hard that was. Good for you for sticking with it. It would have been easy to say, "Tonight doesn't count." But you didn't. Great job. And congrats on the upcoming marriage!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. It would have been easy to give in but I would have let down a lot of people who have supported me throughout the last six months :)
ReplyDeleteHi Ian,
ReplyDeleteI applaud your efforts to be sober and applaud your ability to do so at the stag!! I can remember the first year of my sobriety and it was tough. I journaled with my non-dominant hand a lot, took lots of walks ad went to 4-5 meetings a day. I mad it and so can you... why, you ARE doing it, Good for you!! Keep on keeping' on... :)
